I've never read any of the manga pre-Rising events, so I can't speak on how good/faithful of an adaptation S1 > S2 were, but I did read the events of Rising prior to my first watching of it and I hated Rising then. New Challenger had the best Takamura fight and probably the best fight of the series. I wish there were more fights where he genuinely dominated. There's a few fights he should have lost, and many others where he's just barely scrapped by. In hindsight, it's amazing how genuinely lucky Ippo has been in winning some of his fights. Partly due to having far more episodes than S2 & 3, but S1 definitely has the best comedy Champion Road was great in this regard too.

The intensity of that fight was papatable and contained some of the best animation/art of the season. I'll try to keep my thoughts concise.ДЇirst 'season' is easily the best and has my favourite Ippo fight in the series: Ippo vs Sendo Round #2.
